Promoting a site on Google

Google’s mission is to organize all the information on the web and make it more accessible and useful for all surfers on the internet.

As a first stage, in realizing this vision, the Google founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, developed a new and progressive approach for online searching, that was born in a dorm room at the University of Stanford and spread quickly among the information seekers all over the world. Today, Google is known as the biggest and most popular search engine in the world - a free, easy to use service, which gives the most relevant results within seconds.

The efficiency and easy use of Google, which was promoted almost entirely by word of mouth by satisfied users, has transformed it into one of the best-known trademarks in the world. As a business, the Google Company generates income by giving the opportunity to advertise online in an efficient format, measurable and relevant to the information displayed on any given page.

The secret of Google’s success is in their simple attitude “less is more”. This attitude is the main anchor for the way the surfers perceive Google which was chosen as the trademark of the year for 2003, before Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft and other giant companies.

Advertising on the internet: thousand of advertisers use the program Google AdWords to promote their products and services on the internet by specific advertising. In addition thousands of site managers make use of the program Google AdSense to provide relevant adverts to their sites, improve their ability to generate income and intensify the experience for the surfers on their site.

What is the origin of the expression?

Googol is the mathematical phrase for the number 1 and 100 zeros. The phrase was given by Milton Sirotta who was the mathematician Eduard Kesner’s nephew. He received publicity in the book “Mathematics and the Imagination” by Kesner and James Newman. Google’s use of the phrase reflects the ambition of the company to organize the vast amount of information available on the internet.

The technology needed to optimize a site on Google

Google focuses on developing the “perfect search engine”, which was defined by one of the founders, Larry Page, as something “that understands exactly what you mean and gives back exactly what you are looking for”. In this context Google aspired to constant innovation and refused to accept the limitations of the existing models. As a result, Google developed a service infrastructure of their own, and developed the PageRank™ technology which was a break-through, and changed the way searches are carried out on the web.

From the beginning, the developers at Google identified that getting quick and accurate results meant a new way of redefining the server. While most of the search engines worked from a few big servers that are often slowed by heavy traffic, Google operates several PC’s connected to find an answer to every question quickly. The criteria for evaluating a site are complex and are updated constantly. The PageRank™ that Google gives to sites- becomes a criterion and maintains the high level of this search engine. This is the reason for the credit given to this search engine over other search engines by the surfers.

The program behind Google’s searching technology performs a series of simultaneous calculations that require only a fraction of a second to do. As opposed to other traditional search engines that rely heavily on the times a word appears on an internet page, Google uses the PageRank™ to examine the full structure of the internet link to define which pages are more important and which less. After that, an analysis of the hyper-text is done to determine which pages are relevant to the specific search done. By combining the general importance and the specific relativity to the question, Google can display the most relevant and reliable results. The PageRank™ that a surfer can see by downloading a special toolbar is not identical to the PageRank™ that the search engine uses.

The PageRank™ technology performs an objective measurement of the importance of the internet page by solving an equation of more then 500 million variables and 2 billion concepts. Instead of counting direct links,  PageRank™ interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote for page B from page A. Later PageRank™ evaluates the importance of the page by the number of votes that it gets. In addition PageRank™ weighs the importance of every page that votes, because votes from some pages are considered more valuable, so it gives the connected page more value. More important pages get a higher PageRank™ and appear on the top of the result page. The technology of Google uses the combined information of the internet to determine the importance of a page. There is no human involvement and no possibility of involvement with the results. As a result, users have got full confidence in Google results as a source for objective information that is not “flawed” by commercial interests.

When analyzing a hyper-text, the Google search engine analyses the contents of the page. However, instead of performing a simple scan to find a page based on the text (that can be tampered with by using meta-tags), Google’s technology analyses the full context of the page, elements of the font, sub dividers and the specific place of every word by a complex secret algorithm. In addition, Google analyses the contents of the adjoining internet pages to ensure the returned results are the most relevant to the question asked.

However, the criteria to evaluate sites in Google change regularly, so a criterion of importance today may, in the near future, be of lower importance to the Google search engine. There are many experts today that believe the criteria correspond with human intelligence.

Promoting a site on Google

Google is no doubt the best search engine that exists today. This can be seen by its popularity, the expanding services it gives and the accurate results (compared to other search engines like Live, YAHOO, AOL, ASK and others). Google has taken over 60% of the Israeli search engine market - over search engines like Tapuz, Walla, Nana and others. Getting traffic from Google to your site in Israel is much simpler then getting traffic worldwide because of the low competition in Hebrew.

Google optimizing
There are two ways to optimize a site for Google: The first is optimizing the site for the organic results. This is no doubt the best way because most of the entries to a site are through these results. Because this process takes between 6-12 months to give results it is recommended to combine it with the second method, which is advertising on Google.

GoogleBot

Google has a program called GoogleBot. This program was written in C++ and it is on the Linux server. It goes from one site to another according to the links and the connections among them. The GoogleBot is responsible for analyzing and understanding the different sites. It goes through billions of sites and saves the important information in specific data bases. When a question is asked on Google, the search is done in the data bases and not online. The GoogleBot, however, works well and is considered one of the best programs of its kind, but as site owners we can make the GoogleBot understand our site better by site optimization.

Applying the requirements of the GoogleBot - Google optimization

When building or rearranging a site online, the GoogleBot should be taken into account as a program and as such its limitations and capabilities come from the algorithms that direct it. A site is built for surfers but the way search engines read the site should be taken into account. One of the key phrases in Google’s vision is “Focus on the user and all else will follow” – focus on the user. Google knows the power of the user and puts the end user in the center of their actions and thought. Because of that, Google leads the trends in the world internet market. From loud sites with little context the market is moving to clean design lines, simple and easy to use interfaces with original, rich and high quality text.
